In 1977, The Home Surgeon's founder, Jim Gerhard Sr., entered the construction business. Always preferring "hands on" work, Jim was naturally drawn to commercial and residential building. As it turns out, his timing couldn't have been better.

In the late 70s, the construction business was dominated by professionals who had honed their craft prior to World War II, but had to earn their living after it. This means they were first taught the "old fashioned" way--when houses were primarily constructed of bricks and plaster--and then learned how to do it all over again, the "new" way--when drywall became prevalent in an effort to help meet the growing demand for new homes. These are the craftsmen who taught Jim everything he knows (or at least knew then!). They were true craftsmen, skilled in every phase of building and construction and they took extreme pride in their work--no detail was too small to fuss about.
Knowing both methods of construction proved very valuable, as Jim was frequently called upon to install and finish the drywall of new homes, as well as repair and refinish the plaster and of older ones. A quick study, Jim soon expanded his knowledge base to include not just drywall and plaster, but framing, remodeling, finished basements, flooring, painting and beyond. These are the skills and experience that have become the trademark of The Home Surgeon.
Begun in a time when business was conducted on a handshake and a promise, The Home Surgeon has since expanded and flourished. Keeping with the times, we remain in-step with the latest trends in housing and construction. The Home Surgeon has never forgotten the values, beliefs, and ethics of those who came before them. Attention to detail and the pursuit of perfection can still be found on every job.
